Have you tried Balinese Massage yet?

So here’s the low down on our wonderful massage therapy Balinese style.

Balinese massage originated in Indonesia and is a specialist Ayurvedic* massage bringing equilibrium to the body. Firm pressure and long strokes are used to balance the Chi energy element and bring a sense of calm to the whole being. It helps to stimulate the circulatory and lymph systems, clearing pathways for physical and energetic flow. Working on the whole body using long strokes, skin rolling techniques and stretches promotes a release of blockages and tension build up as well as balancing the main chakras. Traditionally this was healing treatment and herbs were used to heal painful areas until tourism meant that more relaxation techniques were incorporated into the techniques.

What is Ayurveda?

The traditional Hindu system of medicine (incorporated in Atharva Veda, the last of the four Vedas), which is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing.

This massage technique fuses ancient techniques in order to provide a restorative experience. Reflex and acupressure points are worked on and aromatherapy is an essential part of the whole experience allowing you to use all of your senses to sink deeper into relaxation and a meditative state. The physical aspect does include working into knots and tense muscle fibres so a firm pressure is used however this can be adapted for the client. The release of knots is seen as a release of energy and blockages within the body, allowing Chi energy to flow.

You will be uncovered (one half at a time) to allow the long lomi strokes and each half of the body is worked on from feet to shoulders so we provide disposable underwear and if you are not comfortable with this then adaptations can be made. This fusion of techniques offers a unique experience and is unlike most western styles of massage. Treatments last for 50-60 minutes and at Ostara we do include a scalp massage also.

Here is a quick guide to how Balinese differs to a traditional Swedish Massage:

1. We uncover half of the body working from foot to shoulder using long lomi strokes.

2. Pressure can be firm to work on any blockages

3.Acupressure points, skin rolling, percussion movements & stretches are used.

4.Beautiful scented oils are used to bring balance to the whole being.

5. The focus is on balancing the Chi energy as well as the physical aspect.
